Begeyn, Abraham
Goats in an Italian Landscape
around 1665

Sunny Italianate landscapes found favour with Dutch consumers as a pleasant antidote to urban life. Abraham Begeyn worked in Leiden and Amsterdam but traveled widely, ending his career at the Brandenburg court in Berlin. This painting was probably completed after a sojourn in Rome and Naples. Evening light catches the leaves of a large thistle at left, but a lively goat claims centre stage. A shepherd couple shelter in a hollow nearby.
