Lievens, Jan
The Song of Simeon Le cantique de Siméon
around 1624-5 v. 1624-1625

In this painting, a bearded and balding old man gazes heavenward, his mouth open in song. In the lower left corner appears part of the head, the chest and one hand of a baby wrapped in a red cloth, while above, a bearded middle-aged man peers in at the scene. The central figure can be identified as Simeon, the infant as Jesus and the observer as Joseph. This painting, which has unfortunately been cut down at the bottom and left edges, probably started out as a scene of half-length figures.
