3 May 2019

The Agnes Etherington Art Centre is unveiling Rembrandt van Rijn’s Head of an Old Man with Curly Hair (1659) on Friday, May 3, 2019 as part of their Spring/Summer Season Launch.

Head of an Old Man with Curly Hair will join three other Rembrandts previously donated to  Agnes collection by Alfred Bader and his family. Known for his work as a chemist, entrepreneur, visionary philanthropist, and discerning collector of art, the Queen’s alum passed away on Sunday, Dec. 23, 2018. The Bader Collection has brought international renown to the Agnes and comprises over 200 paintings spanning the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

Head of an Old Man with Curly Hair was donated in memory of the late Dr Alfred Bader by his son and daughter-in-law, David and Linda Bader.

Head of an Old Man with Curly Hair was one of my father’s favourite paintings. It hung in his living room, where he spent hours admiring it, until he gave it to me in 2001,” said David Bader.

“My wife Linda and I are proud to present this beautiful painting to Queen’s in my father’s honour.”

Bader Curator and Researcher of European Art at Agnes Dr Jacquelyn N. Coutré described the donation as a “extraordinary gesture” that “honours Alfred’s memory in a tremendously appropriate manner.” Coutré said she was “pleased that this painting will be here to enrich possibilities for learning and discovery for all of our audiences.”

Agnes Director Jan Allen also expressed her gratitude for the gift, stating that Head of an Old Man with Curly Hair “extends the impact of The Bader Collection at Queen’s in powerful ways.” Allen lauded Linda and Daniel Bader’s generosity and thoughtfulness in thanking them for making the painting available for present and future generations.

The Spring/Summer Season Launch will be taking place at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre Friday, May 3, 2019. There will be opening remarks at 6 p.m. and a public reception from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Galleries will remain open until 9 pm. Head of an Old Man with Curly Hair remains on view in The Bader Gallery.
