This shawl was once thought to be of Indian manufacture due to its association with Anne Macaulay Cartwright (1829-1930), who spent some time in India between 1857 and 1867. The material evidence shows that this shawl was of European manufacture, eliminating the possibility that it was a souvenir. The shawl’s fibres further suggest that it was made in Norwich sometime between the late 1850s and the late 1860s, making it possible that Anne Macaulay Cartwright received this shawl as a wedding gift from her bridegroom, Bowen Van Straubenzee (1829-1898) in 1857. It is possible that he purchased the shawl from one of Kingston’s merchants, whose textiles and other commercial goods were largely imported from Britain.
