Mountainous Landscape (No. 6 in a series of 6: “Six Landscapes”) Mountainous Landscape (No. 6 in a series of 6: “Six Landscapes”)
1640 1640

The Dutch fashion for realistic landscape did not entirely displace the public’s appreciation of invention, as represented here in Saftleven’s fantasy mountain landscape. Familiar with the Flemish landscape tradition, likely through the works of émigré Roelandt Savery, Saftleven applies controlled calm to fantastical mountains and valleys, derived from his drawings and observations of the Alps during his travels to Italy.
