David Milne was drawn to sun dogs: bright spots that flank the sun, linked by a halo, when ice crystals in the atmosphere refract light. While living at Baptiste Lake, near Bancroft, Ontario, he painted several versions of sun dogs viewed from his cabin, using a wet-on-wet painting technique to advantage. The diffusion that happens when watercolour is applied to wetted paper effectively emulates the optical phenomenon in the sky._
