Anthonie Waterloo was born in Lille and lived in Utrecht, Amsterdam, and Leeuwarden at various times throughout his life. He is known primarily as a printmaker and draftsman, though a few painted works do exist. Nothing is known of his artistic training. Landscapes predominate in Waterloo’s artistic production, and even in his biblical subjects, such as The Young Tobias and the Angel, the figures play a minor role. The story of Tobias and the Angel is found in the book of Tobit and tells of Tobias’s father, blind and penniless, sending his son to a far away town to retrieve money left with a friend. The boy is accompanied by a guide who reveals himself to be the angel Raphael. The story ends with Tobias obtaining the money and deriving medicine from a giant fish to cure his father’s blindness.
