Frederic Bell-Smith arrived in Canada at the age of 21 and followed a successful career as artist, photographer and art teacher. In 1887, he obtained a travel pass from the Canadian Pacific Railway and journeyed west to paint views of the Rocky Mountains. He subsequently returned ten more times to photograph and paint in the mountains and on the Pacific coast. Such paintings became central to his career and income as a painter.
