Doomer, Lambert
A Ram in a Wooded Landscape Un bélier dans un paysage boisé
around 1665 v. 1660

If Abraham Begeyn and Adam Pynacker treat animals with gentle humour, Lambert Doomer presents this life-size ram, absent-mindedly scratching his cheek, as the monumental hero of a comic opera. While Doomer’s teacher, Rembrandt, made wonderful drawings of lions and other creatures, animals did not feature largely in his paintings. Doomer’s animal studies thus expanded the reach of Rembrandt’s impact into a new corner of the art market.
