Following a trip to Europe in 1967, Tony Urquhart stopped painting and began working on a series of constructed box works. Inspired by the high-altar retables he had seen in France, he began building boxes with opening doors placed on pedestals. Dark Green is a late example from this series. On one side, a plexi-glas cover protects a fetishistic form, while on the other, a door opens to reveal an object reminiscent of an African mask.
Born and raised in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Tony Urquhart studied at the Albright Art School of the University of Buffalo. He has worked as a painter, a draftsman and a sculptor.
