Karel van Mander acclaimed the Flemish painter and draughtsman Gillis van Conninxloo as the best landscape painter of his time. Van Conninxloo drew inspiration from the natural world, but he also idealized the sceneries he created, lending his compositions a sublime quality. Many artists imitated his landscapes and reproduced his works in the form of prints. The artist who engraved the current work adapted Van Conninxloo’s style, providing his landscape with a wealth of detail. Large trees dominate the foreground of this peaceful landscape. The stream of water is so calm that the houses and trees along the riverbank reflect on the surface of the water as though it were a mirror. Individuals carrying out daily tasks populate different parts of the landscape. Two figures, Tobias and the Archangel Raphael, walk along a country road near the bottom centre of the scene. Tobias’s dog runs ahead of them, his attention captivated by something outside of the picture plane. Tobias and the angel are engaged in a conversation. The angel gestures toward the river with his right hand. Perhaps he is forewarning his companion of the fish that will leap out at Tobias from the Tigris River—an episode narrated in chapter six of the Book of Tobit.
