This work is a reproductive print of Georg Pencz’s 1543 engraving, The Blinding of Tobit. It is possible that this version was engraved by the Flemish artist and print publisher Joannes Meyssens. Meyssens was active in Antwerp during the mid-seventeenth century, and his name appears near the bottom right corner of the print. As a reproductive engraving, this work reproduces Pencz’s image in reverse. As such, Tobit is shown at the left, while the subsidiary episode of Anna and the kid is positioned at the right of the print. The artist remains faithful to Pencz’s original; however, the current work lacks the tonal gradations and subtleties—most noticeable in the clothing of the figures, Tobit’s bed and the wall of the building beside which the latter rests—that Pencz was able to achieve in his engraving.
