In the mid-1640s, Hondius re-printed all four scenes found in Moses van Uyttenbroeck’s series related to the story of Tobias. This print reproduces Van Uyttenbroeck’s 1620 etching Tobias Surprised by the Fish. Since Van Uyttebroeck’s etchings were made available in multiple states, Hondius also published the works in their numerous states. In total, there are four states of Tobias Surprised by the Fish. The current work represents the fourth state of this subject. In comparison to the second state (an impression of which can also be found in the Agnes’s collections), a row of lines has been added at the top of the composition and a group of bushy trees now populates the hilly landscape in the distance.
