Velde, Jan van de, II; Buytewech, Willem Pietersz. (after)
Tobit and Anna with the Kid Tobie et Anne avec le chevreau
around 1619 v. 1619

The aged and sightless Tobit accuses his virtuous wife Anna of having stolen the kid she received as a reward for her diligent labour. Van de Velde worked from a drawing by Buytewech, whose bent for genre subjects emerges in the emphatic expressions and the comic note of the bug-eyed baby goat, as well as the perception of the humorous potential of this clash in pieties. Rembrandt later adapted this composition in one of his earliest paintings, and both works in turn inspired depictions by Gerbrand van den Eeckhout and Barent Fabritius.
