Koninck, Philips
Panoramic River Landscape with Hunters Paysage fluvial panoramique avec chasseurs
around 1664 v. 1664

Philips Koninck painted history and genre scenes, but is best known for ambitious panoramic landscapes like this one. Koninck and Rembrandt were friends and may have gone sketching together in the countryside around Amsterdam. With drawings in hand, paintings were composed in the studio. Here, movement and balance are key: figures and animals dot the landscape, while patches of water and sunlight draw the eye toward the horizon.
