Ottmar Elliger the Younger was a German painter and engraver who trained under the tutelage of his father, Ottmar Elliger the Elder, until the latter died, at which time Elliger the Younger moved to Amsterdam. There, Elliger the Younger first studied with the Dutch painter and printmaker Michiel de Musscher, before later joining the studio of Gérard de Lairesse. Lairesse’s classicizing tendencies had a profound impact on the young German artist. The subject of the present pen and ink drawing is taken from chapter eleven of the Book of Tobit (11:11–13). Tobias has returned home from his long voyage to Media and is curing his father’s blindness. Elliger the Younger sets the operation outdoors. Tobit sits on a large stone slab as his son applies the gall of the fish to his father’s eyes. The former has his hands clasped together praying for a favourable outcome. Anna and the Archangel Raphael closely observe the procedure. Though he is depicted without wings—at this point in the biblical narrative the angel has yet to reveal his celestial identity—Raphael’s stance conveys an air of confidence. As a messenger of God, he knows the operation will be successful: Tobit will regain his vision. To the right, items are displayed in a still-life arrangement. Sarah, who is on the verge of dismounting her horse in the background, will present these gifts to her in-laws.
