Forming radiating colour frequencies through the layering of thin pigments, Ulrich Panzer makes ‘songs of light’ inspired by the merging of the senses, synesthetic perceptions of sound. While it is reminiscent of domed ceilings, mandalas, or the colour accretions of minerals and seashells, the piece also continually avows the present act of seeing. Sensation and form oscillate. The paintings offer an extraordinary spaciousness held in a balance between pictorial space and inner reflection.
This painting is part of a series that evolved from the artist’s previous series of mono-prints featuring multiple coloured circles; here the circles grow and develop as individual forms. Panzer’s work is influenced by his extensive travels through Europe and Asia, including his year-long residency in Tibet.
