Hamilton-based artist, Joseph Hartman has photographed 124 artists’s studios since 2013 in this ongoing series. In Tim Pitsiulak, 2016, we are given an immersive view of Tim Pitsiulak’s studio.Tim Pitsiulak (1967-2016) was an accomplished sculptor, jewelry-maker and photographer. He is best known for the extraordinary drawings that have made him one of the most sought-after contemporary Inuit artists.
Pitsiulak divided his time between drawing and hunting. His respect for the wildlife in his region is evident in his large scale drawings capturing the images of walrus, whales, bears and seals. Pitsiulak also expressed admiration for his ancestors by including images from early Inuit culture superimposed on his drawings. He challenged himself as an artist, working in different, varying scale, perspective and media.

The photograph is an intimate view of the artists’ personal creative space, which provides insight into his creative process: both the physical process of how a drawing is made, and the mental process related to source material and the origin of ideas.
