At age 54, George Harlow White set out for Canada to homestead at Oro, near Shanty Bay, Lake Simcoe. He stayed for six years and exhibited actively with the Ontario Society of Artists during that time. He was made an ‘Honourary, non-resident academician’ of the Royal Canadian Academy when it formed in 1880. By that time, White was back in England, living as a pensioner at Charterhouse, London. While in Canada, he created a series of 100 exquisite pencil drawings of forest scenes around his homestead, of which this is one.
