Houbraken, Jacob
Anne of Denmark, Queen of King James I Anne du Danemark, reine du roi Jacques Ier
1743-1752 1743-1752

The daughter of Frederik II of Denmark, Anne (1574–1619) married King James VI of Scotland (and future King James I of England) in 1589 at the tender age of fifteen. Although she appears rather stiff in this portrait, Anne is a noteworthy example of how women took an interest in portraiture–whether as admirers, patrons or collectors–throughout the sixteen to eighteen centuries in Britain. She had a sophisticated eye for the visual arts, and contributed to cultural life at court by commissioning several artistic projects during her reign.
