Scheuchzer, Johann Jacob
A cosmic temple of the Aztecs (Plate 328) Temple cosmique des Aztèques (planche 328)
1731-1735 1731-1733

Johann Scheuchzer was a Swiss naturalist and professor of mathematics who produced Physica Sacra, a detailed explication of Biblical events using the forms of physics, medicine and natural history. Every illustration references a specific chapter and verse from the King James Bible. Scientists were interested in the temple as a structure that could be used to understand the universe. It is difficult to know how the author chose which authority to follow for various details in his reconstructions._
