Bloemaert, Abraham
A Farm House with a Wattle Fence, Tobias and the Angel in the Foreground
around 1650

Disguised as a helpful guide, the Archangel Raphael shows the way to the young Tobias on their journey to Rages, while Tobias’s dog scampers ahead. With lavish description and a lively vibrato line, the prominent Utrecht painter and draughtsman revisits his own early painted composition of 1605, when native rural topography was just emerging as subject matter in Dutch art.
