Bloemaert, Cornelis, II (after Abraham Bloemaert)
A Reclining Goatherd with Tobias and the Angel; nr. 10 in a series of 16: Otium
17th century

This scene of two travellers in a landscape presents the theme of the Guardian Angel, almost certainly using the figures of Tobias and the Archangel Raphael on their journey. Even though they are not named in the inscription below the image, or accompanied by the telltale dog, they interact with each other as described in the Tobit story. Abraham Bloemaert produced numerous compositions of this scene—several of which were reproduced in print by his son Cornelis—typically allowing the rural setting to compete with the figures for importance.
