Pynacker, Adam
An Ox and a Donkey in the Shade Bœuf et âne à l'ombre
around 1655-60 v. 1655-1660

Like two companionable old friends, an ox and a reclining donkey rest beneath a tree, while shepherds in the background gather for the midday meal. The calligraphic play of slender tree branches against blue sky is typical of Adam Pynacker’s landscapes, often set in hilly, southern terrain. Born near Rotterdam, Pynacker travelled in Italy and France before settling in Amsterdam.
