Things that fly fascinated Kinngait artist Pudlo Pudlat. Airplanes often occupy his graphic work, marking transitions between nomadic and settled lifestyles, and the incongruencies of Arctic landscape and introduced technologies. Here, an angel not an airplane soars, with spectacular, almost-techno wings and dress. The design on the angel’s chest suggests—and has been interpreted as—a cross, but maybe it’s not quite. With humour, Pudlat combined fantasy and reality: “I only draw what I think, but sometimes I think the pencil has a brain too.”._
