Jean-Louis, Don
As Death Approaches, Love Becomes More Willing
1985

Don Jean-Louis was born in Ottawa and moved to Toronto in 1961, where he joined the “second generation” of artists represented by the Isaacs Gallery. Anton Van Dalen, Les Levine and Christiane Pflug were among the other artists in this circle. The early work of Jean-Louis demonstrated his interest in the study of nature. He has worked in a wide variety of media including, drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, video and photography. As a painter, he has explored the qualities of paint itself, the chemical reactions of various materials and the effects of the environment on a work’s appearance. As Death Approaches, Love Becomes More Willing… is an example of these investigations. Jean-Louis has created a number of works using pigments of various densities, upon which he allowed variables such as time, heat, humidity and sunlight to act and thus affect the end result.
