Barn Raising Log Cabin (velvet centres)
1900

Decorative gimp ribbon was used for the ‘logs’ of this log cabin quilt. It rendered a rich and sumptuous effect in a quilt that would have been more decorative than practical. The concentric diamond shapes of the tonal pattern – light, dark, light, dark – designate the pattern as ‘Barn Raising’. The red centres to each square symbolize the hearth of the log cabin.
