Vliet, Jan van
Beggars
1632

This print by Jan van Vliet forms the titlepage to a series of ten prints of beggars. An artist who made reproductive engravings after compositions by Rembrandt van Rijn, Van Vliet was also inspired by the Leiden master in this instance. His depiction of an act of charity is a fitting beginning to the series, as is the inscription. It reads, “Our life exists through giving.”
