Doeringer’s ‘Chris Ofili’ is a “bootleg” of Chris Ofili’s ‘The Holy Virgin Mary’, 1996. The original work was featured in the Sensation exhibition which featured works from the Saatchi Collection and was exhibited, with much controversy, at the tate Modern in London as well as at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York.
Doeringer creates what he calls “bootlegs,” which are copies of work by other well known artists. He sells these works on sidewalks and in parking lots – which puts them in a category more like the ilicit taping of bands by eager fans (and profiteers) rather than counterfeit works trying to pass themselves off as the real things. Doeringer uses a combination of collage and painting as well as other techniques to generate his knock-off artworks.
