Andrews, Stephen
Crowd 2004
1997

Stephen Andrews is a Canadian artist based in Toronto. From afar, Crowd shows a group of spectators engaged in the act of looking. Andrews abstracts the identities of his figures and blends their features into colourful dots, blurring the individual and the crowd. This work highlights the limitations of sight by revealing only partial identities. Crowd depicts anonymous pixelated people who appear below the viewer, evoking a feeling of surveillance.
