Going for Caribou À la recherche du caribou
1972 1972

The Pangnirtung Print Shop was established in 1969 in an effort to increase local employment and a cash economy. They released their first print collection in 1973 and were known primarily for their stencil prints. Imoona Karpik’s work is less well-known when compared to that of his brother Solomon Karpik and his nephew Andrew Qappik (the artist who helped designed Nunavut’s flag). Going for Caribou is a traditional hunting scene in which two figures and a dog (likely pulling a sled which is out of the picture plane) traverse an Arctic terrain. The muted, earthy colours and almost fuzzy application of ink is the result of the stencil printing technique and are common in Pangnirtung prints.
