The Akan began mining gold in the late thirteenth century and traded it with their neighbours in the West African Sahel region, then across the Sahara Desert to North Africa. Their early goldweights tended toward geometric designs, a style favoured by their Sahel neighbours. Gradually, Akan metalsmiths expanded their repertoire to include humans, animals, birds and plants, but geometric forms remained the most common.
