Hannah Presenting Samuel to Eli Hannah présentant Samuel à Eli
Around 1710 v. 1710

In this touching Old Testament scene, Hannah fulfills a promise by dedicating her only son, Samuel, to a life of service in the Temple. He will grow up to take the place of Eli, the high priest. Arent de Gelder, Rembrandt’s last pupil, adopted his teacher’s love of lofty spaces and fabulous costumes to picture the world of ancient Judaism. He also adapted Rembrandt’s earthy palette and expressive brushwork.
