Green, Valentine (after Anthony van Dyck)
Henry Danvers, Earl of Danby
1775
Henry Danvers, Earl of Danby (1573–1644), was an army officer and administrator. This full-length portrait illustrates Danvers’s commanding stature. The light shining directly onto his face further heightens his prestigious social ranking, while he confidently stares at the viewer. Valentine Green captured many of the elements of the original artwork after which this print was made–including the lengthening of the sitter’s face and the velvety tone of the clothes and drapery–both typical Van Dyckian features in portraits of the first half of the seventeenth century.
