Inukpuk, Charlie
Kneeling Nursing Mother with Child Mère à genoux allaitant son enfant
1955-1956 v. 1955-1956

One of the most important and repeated themes for Inuit artists is that of ‘mother and child’.

The Inuit amauti, or woman’s parka, is designed so a child can be brought forward from its mother’s back to be nursed without leaving the warmth of the mother’s parka. In this sculpture, loving security is conveyed by the mother’s encircling arms within the encircling warmth of her amauti.
