The basic three-stemmed stylized floral motif was popular in the 19th century, and can be found in many variations, with different flower heads. In the Heritage Quilt Collection, there are currently exists a Tulip Quilt (Q00-003) and a Conventional Tulip Quilt (Q83-19), which incorporate similar organically shaped motifs to the Lily Quilt. According to Ruth McKendry, “flower patterns are usually found on good quilts” and the lily was a favourite during this period.1 By the time the present owner’d great-grandmother was stitching this quilt, patterns were printed in newspapers and pattern books were available even in rural areas.2 Thie would be the first example of the Lily Quilt to enter the collection.
