The unadorned font and quietly unassuming words emerge like ghosts from the printed surface, listing the names of some of the Indigenous nations that were made extinct through colonial warfare or disease. With its biblical overtones and unnerving dispassion, the work is a potent memorial to the disappeared. It reflects the artist’s ongoing critical investigation of colonial naming, historical amnesia, and appropriation, and grows out of the artist’s embrace of post-modern textual practices in the 1980s, which opened new vistas of political engagement.
