Nobody knows…
2015

This drawing and its companion piece how could she know… make explicit reference to two texts: The Straight Mind and Other Essays, a 1992 collection by Monique Wittig that includes essays dating from 1976 to 1990; and Cruising Utopia: The Then and There of Queer Futurity, a 2009 book by José Esteban Muñoz. Nobody knows… features a hand drawn portrait of José Esteban Muñoz, depicted holding a sign saying “NOBODY KNOWS I’M A LESBIAN.” Despite the decades between these texts, both are central to discussions around the possibility of a queer future; they question ruling constructions of gender and sexuality, while imagining a future not bound to heterosexual norms and cissexual assumption.
