Louis de Niverville’s work is highly personal and includes not only explorations into the subconscious, but also imagery that evokes the experiences of his childhood. His work opens the door to an upside-down irrational world with references that suggest different associations to individual viewers. Paper Box Company Workers Asleep in the Kitchen is an example of de Niverville’s mature style, with its emphasis on simplified geometrical shapes and bold use of colour. De Niverville was largely self-taught, working in the areas of design (most notably for CBC television beginning in 1957), and public mural decoration.
