Dijck, Abraham van
Portrait of a Fifty-Year-Old Woman
1655

Soberly dressed and frontally posed, this unidenti?ed woman may be a widow, painted in the artist’s home city of Dordrecht. Abraham van Dijck lends her self-contained form a quiet dignity. Thick, impastoed strokes of pigment and sensitve modelling of light and shade are expressive techniques he learned from his teacher, Rembrandt.
