Luttichuijs, Isaack (attributed to)
Portrait of a Gentleman
around 1638

This unidentified Dutch gentleman stands on the threshold of his home. The Amsterdammerpoort in the background sets the scene on Haarlem’s outskirts. With his wide-brimmed cap, lace collar, and buck leather hunting boots, the sitter is dressed in the height of country fashion for the 1630s. He stands with elbow akimbo in a pose suggesting masculine pride. The attentive whippet reinforces its master’s status both by its adoring gaze and by associating him with the aristocratic sport of hunting.
