Godfrey Kneller’s impact as a portraitist was far-reaching. As a court painter to four sovereigns, he dominated English art for more than thirty years. Carlo Gregori, an Italian artist, paid homage to the portraitist by depicting the master in a reproductive engraving (the original Kneller painting is housed at National Portrait Gallery, London). William III knighted and presented Kneller with a chain and medal bearing the King’s head–a gift that features here.
