Coelenbier, Jan
River Scene Vue de rivière
1640 v. 1640

Although rich with details evoking rural life, this watery scene is thinly painted with loose brushstrokes and earthy colours. Such works could be rapidly produced to satisfy the demand for landscape paintng, the fastest growing aspect of the Dutch art market. Jan Coelenbier was one of many artists who built a career on paintng scenes of the Dutch countryside. He lived in Haarlem, a short journey from Amsterdam.
