Franceschini, Baldassare (known as Il Volterrano)
Six Studies of the Virgin and Child
Around 1765

This sheet with studies of the Virgin and Child evinces the workings of the artistic mind. Working swiftly and with concern for compelling composition over details of form, Baldassare Franceschini explores a variety of poses to arrive at the most satisfying one. Of concern are the arrangement of the Virgin’s arms, the contours of which have been strengthened by repeated and overlapping strokes. Such study demonstrates an almost scientific interest in compositional possibilities.
