The Angel Leaving Tobias and His Family The Angel Leaving Tobias and His Family
Around 1672 Around 1672

The junior De Wet followed his father in painting dramatic, small-figured Biblical scenes based on Rembrandt’s early Leiden works, even while drawing on some of Rembrandt’s later themes, as seen here. The prominent motif of the radiant angel ascending into a cloud is adapted from Rembrandt’s famous painting of the same theme, of 1637, now in the Louvre.
