Ridolfo Ghirlandaio, son of the celebrated early Renaissance artist Domenico Ghirlandaio, was born in Florence and received his earliest training from his father. He also studied with Fra Bartolommeo and was associated with Raphael in Florence. Ridolfo Ghirlandaio is known primarily as a painter of portraits, though he also received significant commissions, such as for the decoration of the Cappella dei Papi in Santa Maria Novella in Florence. These small grisaille panels of the Annunciation are the outside panels to the doors of a small altarpiece. The inside panels are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
