Cuyp, Benjamin Gerritsz.
The Appearance of Jesus to the Disciples at Emmaus
Around 1640

Cuyp conjures the moment of Christ revealing his identity to two of his disciples after his resurrection. He stands up and raises his hands in the air, as the disciple seated to the left clasps his hands together in prayer, and his companion twists away to the right. Cuyp uses the candle as a central point around which the actions occur. The light, gestures, muted colours and sketchy brushwork all testify to Rembrandt’s influence.
