Goudt, Hendrik; Adam Elsheimer (after)
The Large Tobias Le grand Tobie
1613 1613

Presented here is Elsheimer’s second painted composition on this theme, in which he conjured up a darker shaded background of foliage and riverbank, and introduced more dynamic twists to the stark profile views of the figures seen in his 1608 version. Unfortunately, his original has been lost, and is known primarily through Goudt’s engraving. This exceptionally fine impression demonstrates Goudt’s remarkable achievement of velvety areas of dark tones.
