Like Raguel Welcoming Tobias, the previous plate in this series, The Marriage of Tobias and Sarah illustrates scenes from chapter seven of the Book of Tobit. On the right side of the engraving, Raguel and his guests are to dine and make merry, but before the company eats, Tobias insists on asking Sarah’s hand in marriage. Raguel accepts Tobias’s proposal, and at centre, the former offers his daughter to Tobias. Sarah and Tobias hold each other by the hand, while Raguel rests his arms over their extended hands to mark this joyous matrimony. Sarah wears a floral crown and elegant patterns adorn parts of her dress. Touched by the moment, Edna places her hands against her heart. Above the main characters, a representation of Moses holding the Tablets of the Law ornaments a lunette. Not only do Tobias and Sarah receive Raguel’s blessing, the allusion to Moses and the presence of the Archangel Raphael also serve as evidence that God sanctions the couple’s marriage.
