Kenojuak Ashevak depicted owls throughout her career. Often peering directly at the viewer, they are faces of the sky that take on many characters. Though separated by only a year, these two are quite different in treatment. In The Owl, Ashevak’s drawn design, carefully carved into the print stone, articulates the bird’s fancy plumage. In the other, birds and foliage radiate from a central owl, the warm heart of the print emphasized by cooling gradations of colour._
